Winter Wonderland?

Thanksgiving is behind us and I've already baked a few batches of cookies, listened to all my favorite holiday music CD's, and have even done some gift shopping so I know that the big holiday is approaching and winter is supposed to be here, but something's missing. It's been cold, but not white.

Having grown up in the very northern regions of MN, you expect snow by Halloween. Full emergency blizzard attire is a requirement for trick or treating along with a flask of peppermint schnaaps if you're the accompaning adult!

As I get older, holiday traditions carry an ever growing importance in my life. I think partially because I only have 4 years with my oldest child before she's officially on her own. My heart breaks a little with each new bit of independence that she gains. Aaaahh.... the parental double edged sword!

Thus the importance of a white Christmas for me. Snow brings with it so many soul satisfying memories... cross country skiing, making snowmen, the hours spent patiently carving massive forts and then hiding in them when it was time to go in, shoveling the neighbors sidewalks to earn money to buy gifts for the rest of the family and of course, a multitude of snowball fights.

As I sat by the fire with my son last night, reading books from my childhood and playing board games I realized the missing link in my holiday spirit this year had been snow and decided I will embrace it this year instead of complain about it and ya know what....

This morning when I looked outside at the snow covered landsape that appeared overnight, I realized how lucky I am to live in this Winter Wonderland...

Now who's going to help me shovel?
